What is a Hybrid Vehicle?

A Hybrid Vehicle (sometimes called a "Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)" or "Extended Range Hybrid") is a vehicle that uses both gas and electricity at the same time to increase its miles per gallon (mpg) fuel economy and extend its driving range. Think of it like adding a shot of espresso (electricity) to your coffee drink (gas)-you're already driving on the gas, but the electricity gives you a boost of energy and takes you farther than you would go without it.

And now, the Jeep® Brand offers one such vehicle with the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, a Turbo Hybrid.

What is a Battery Electric Vehicle?

A Battery Electric Vehicle is often called an 'all-electric vehicle,' and sometimes uses the abbreviation BEV or just EV for 'electric vehicle.' This is a vehicle that run entirely on electricity stored in a battery. These vehicles use electromagnetism to move their drive motors, which creates the momentum they use for driving. They're quieter than vehicles that use gas since there's no combustion to create a roar or rumble, and they create nearly zero emissions. That doesn't mean they're necessarily better than vehicles that use gas-there are benefits to both EVs and gas vehicles, depending on what you’re using them for.

Currently, the Jeep Brand has two all-electric vehicles in their lineup—the All-New, All Electric Jeep® Recon and the all-electric Jeep® Wagoneer S.

Driving Habits

Start with thinking about your everyday drives.

Long hauls? A Hybrid could help.

If you have a long commute to your jobsite every day and need the efficiency of extended range, a Hybrid can be beneficial to you because it continuously offers more miles per gallon.

Hate filling up at the pump? A Hybrid will cut out pit stops.

Sometimes, you want to do anything other than stop for gas. The extended range of a Hybrid helps with that, with mileage that'll keep you on the road and away from the pump even longer.

Lots of short commutes or city drives? A BEV makes sense.

If you have a family and make several short drives a day—chauffeuring your kids to and from school, running out for groceries and so on—then a BEV might be better for you because those short drives are all-electric, meaning no stops for gas and nearly zero emissions.

Hybrid vs Battery Electric Vehicle Cost

Saving on gas could be a good tiebreaker between a Hybrid and a Battery Electric Vehicle.

Hybrids offer incredible mileage, meaning less money spent on gas.

The 2026 Jeep® Cherokee offers 37 combined mpg and over 500 miles of driving millas. That means you can drive over 500 miles before ever having to stop at a gas pump.

Charging a BEV costs less money, but it can eat up your time.

Even at a public Level 3 DC Fast Charging station, recharging your EV will cost less than filling up with gas in America today. That said, a Level 3 charge still takes upwards of 20 minutes, so you'll have to budget time for recharging.

Environmental Concerns

Everyone loves Mother Nature, and the Jeep® Brand is here to back her up.

Hybrids save on fuel by harnessing your brakes’ kinetic energy.

If your day regularly includes long drives, a Hybrid might actual be more fuel-efficient and less environmentally impactful in the long run. The regenerative braking process they use to gather electricity doesn't let that energy dissipate as heat and reduces to need to replace your braking components-all of which is good for the planet.

BEVs reduce emissions via all-electric driving.

If significantly reducing your environmental impact is a high priority, a BEV like the Jeep® Wagoneer S or the Jeep Recon is probably your best choice thanks to the near-zero emissions of their all-electric driving capabilities.

Preguntas frecuentes

Battery Electric Vehicles are better for city driving because your drives are usually short and manageable, and because access to an outlet or charging station is as easy as finding a gas station these days. But if you're commuting across a long distance, a Hybrid Vehicle might be your best bet because of its incredible extended driving range.

For short commutes to a nearby workplace or school, the all-electric driving of a Battery Electric Vehicle probably offers you the most efficiency and convenience. For longer drives out to distant jobsites, the extended range of a Hybrid Vehicle is best.
